Fane twisted her combination into her silver lock and yanked on it. She swore under her breath as it didn't open. It took three more attempts until it finally opened for her. Fane leaned against the metalic blue and gray door as she reached inside for her sketch book. Fane hated Math, so she decided to skip. That wasn't unusual for her, afterall, she'd decided that math was unimportant. Besides, she basically knew more than the stupid teacher did. Fane pulled out the black coil-bound book and then dug around for her pencil case. It was burried under her 3 black binders, but she managed to dig it out after a while. Fane turned around and slammed the locker door shut then wandered out to the Quad to sit under her favorite tree. Her blue eyes watched the students go by as she sat down, many of them were giving her funny looks. Fane ignored them and opened her sketchbook and started to draw. She wasn't drawing anyone in particular, just drew whatever she felt like it. At the moment she found herself drawing what could pass as a self portrait.

After a few minutes, when Fane'd really gotten into the drawing, she was interrupted by a group of giggling girls who walked by. She recognized the type, pretty and popular. Fane watched them go by, imagining what they were saying. "Ohmigosh! Did you hear? Whats-his-name asked me to the dance!" - "What? Really? Thats so exciting!!! We have got to go shopping for your dress!!" Fane smirked as they passed by her and went back to her drawing. She flipped the page over and reached for a pencil with a thicker lead, this time she was drawing a few preppy, pretty, girls on the gallows. The looks of horror on the girls' faces made her laugh silently to herself as she reached for her pencil crayons to colour the sketch. She could be so morbid sometimes.

Demi wasn't in class, but she wasn't skipping. She also wasn't using her time wisely. She had study hall this hour, and she had come outside to finish her math homework and start studying for a big AP Bio test. It went from working out a difficult equation, to doodling in the margin, to sitting in the grass, to rolling around in the grass, to organizing her binder, to watching the sky, to writing in her journal. Demi swore she had A.D.D. sometimes. Or at least when it came to math. She couldn't comprehend it at all. Her younger sister was a wiz, but Dems was just math-dumb.

She hummed softly and wrote,

If my heart were big enough, I would fit everyone inside of it and dounce their sadness with endorphins, happy thoughts, vintage clothing, and sweet melodies. But, I guess I'm a betch because I don't smile enough. I can feel my lips curling up as I write this. Is that big enough?
I wish it were stormy today. One of those day where the wind hurts stones. But it couldn't be more beautiful. I hate it when it's beautiful out!

Demi looked up and saw a girl with dark, streaked hair scribbling in a notebook with a wicked smile on her face. She wondered was sort of impossible magic was happening on those pages. She closed her own pages and took a break to watch the passing people.

As Fane coloured in her hanging girls she could feel eyes watching her. She could always tell when people were watching her, and it bugged her to no end. She tried to ignore the feeling as she continued to colour, one of the hanging girls now had curly, brown hair and she was wearing a light pink sundress. Fane could still feel the eyes watching her as she put down the pink pencil crayon and reached for the yellow one.

Suddenly, as she began to colour the second hanging girl, Fane felt the eyes leave her. She turned her head around, getting a full view of the Quad. It was basically empty except for a few people walking through it and a girl sitting on the grass watching the people go by. It must have been her, no one else was loitering around long enough to pay attention to her.

Demi amused herself by squinting into the sun and twisting a huge strand of hair between her fingers. Methodically, she tortured the strand into a stiff knot, and let it loose, again and again. When he eyes began to water, she took her attention away from the sky and to the trees. She lay, resting on her elbows and generally being oblivious of everyone.

A familiar tune played through her head and she soon found herself singing. She didn't sing loud, but even if she had, it voice would have been lost in the strong wind that blew by and lifted her hair over her face, above her head, and back to her shoulders again. Suddenly, she stopped singing. She was looking right into the accusing eyes of that dark-haired girl.

Fane jumpled slightly as the other girl turned back to her and made eye contact. "Hey." She said, rasing her hand in a slight wave. A strong wind suddenly gusted out of nowhere, blowing her blonde streaked hair out of her blue eyes. As the wind stopped Fane reached over to grab her pencil case before standing up. She hesitated for a second before walking over to where the other girl was sitting on the grass and planting herself across from her.

"Hey." Fane said again, not really knowing what else to say. The girl looked familliar, she could possibly be a popular or maybe she was just in one of Fane's classes. She shifted herself into a comfortable position, crosslegged with her sketchbook in her lap.

As Demi watched her, the girl waved, said "Hey" and started to walk over. Demi nodded in a friendly, unaquainted sort of way, and sat up, so that she was resting with her long legs stretched before her, with her weight on her freckled elbows. When the girl got closer, she said "Hey" again, to which Demi replied quietly, "Hello." Not really knowing what to do, she smiled and closed her journal.

So what do you say to a complete stranger? "Hi... Hello... So, you um... draw. That's cool. Do you do anything else?"
Demi struggled with this for a second before she said, "I wasn't staring at you, if you were wondering. I was generally just looking about everywhere... But it would be nice to have some company..." Okay, that was pretty lame, but it was the best she could muster.

She peered down at the sketchbook in the girl's lap. She'd always loved other people's sketchbooks. You could learn a lot about a person that way. And you never knew what sort of secrets were buried between the two dark covers.
